Posters, mass-produced advertisements or announcements, usually printed on large sheets of paper, for public display. The word poster, in its traditional definition, is something printed as an advertisement and "posted" in public areas. At the turn of the century, these advertisements became more artistic as poster artists integrated images and type that were inseparable within the borders of the piece. These images still are recognized as fine art and are highly collectible. To the purist, say today's poster publishers, the poster still is defined as an art medium that successfully integrates a fine art image and graphic type.
